THE telecom regulator may rule that mobile phone companies are entitled to have up to 8 MHz of 2G wireless spectrum without any additional payment.
The third day of spectrum auction for 3G telephony saw the all-India licence bid touching Rs 4,324 crore at the end of 16 rounds, ensuring that the government would get a minimum of Rs 17,636 crore.
The acquisition, which would help Bharti become the world’s No. 5 wireless firm by subscribers with presence in 18 countries.
Banks will earn $75-100 million in fees from the Bharti-Zain deal, which could be 10-15% of the total fees they expect to rake in this year.
Bharti Airtel, which is in the final phase of taking over Zain Telecom’s African assets, has formed two special purpose vehicles (SPVs) in the Netherlands and Singapore to execute the $10.7-billion deal with a lower financial risk.
